‘Close Up’ publication tallies record investments, expansions, tourism impact

Delphi, Ind. – May 25, 2017 – With nearly $423 million in investments in new industries and industrial park expansions in 2016, Carroll County is reporting robust activity. Growth also is occurring in its agriculture and tourism sectors, said Laura Walls, executive director of Carroll County Economic Development Corp.

“This activity is also bringing in new retailers, restaurants and service businesses,” Walls said. “We are experiencing a significant surge of interest in our county.”

The biggest news in 2016 was the announcement by GEP Fuel & Energy Indiana that it would build and open Camden Recycling LLC and Integrated Green Partners LLC, a recycling center and plastics-to-renewable diesel refinery that will together cost between $300 million and $410 million.

Other leading developments include: $23 million investment by Indiana Packers Corp., a hog processing facility with 2,100 employees, for its new cold storage distribution center; Next Day Container’s 20,000 square feet of additional space; and launch of the seven-building, 45-acre Peters Industrial Development site for warehouse and light manufacturing tenants.

“Local jobs have reached the 8,000 mark, up from recent years, and wages, too, are on the rise, up 49.7 percent since 2000,” Walls said. “We are also seeing tremendous contributions from our heritage tourism sector,” she said. “Since its late 2015 opening through yearend 2016, the Delphi Opera House hosted nearly 50 public performances, as well as an impressive number of private bookings and tours.”

In 2016, The Wabash & Erie Canal Park and Interpretive Center expanded its blacksmith shop, restored the interior of an 1889 church moved to the site and added an old post office to the grounds. “Because of its interactive museum, range of activities for children and adults and canal boat ride, the Canal Park is drawing a growing number of visitors each year,” Walls said.

Carroll County Economic Development Tallies Successes
‘Close Up’ report launched to highlight activity

Delphi, Ind. – March 17, 2015 – Growth in industries, solid performance in the agricultural sector, the first tenant for a new industrial park and $31 million in capital investments are among the successes highlighted in a just-launched publication by Carroll County Economic Development called “Close Up, Keeping Our Eye on the Economy.”

“Because of our recent growth and projects on the horizon, 2015 is the dawn of a new era for us,” says Laura Walls, executive director of the nonprofit organization. “A number of factors, from the recently opened Hoosier Heartland Highway to the arrival of our newest industry, Next Day Container, signal continued vibrant activity.”

The county’s new, 60-acre Hoosier Heartland Industrial Park will welcome its first tenant this year when the electric utility, Carroll White REMC, finishes its new building. Others are eyeing the site, Walls said, because it has been designated shovel-ready by the state and water and sewer lines have been extended to each lot.

“Carroll County has been working hard to create interest in our area, and it’s paying off,” Walls said.

The “Close Up” report also highlights the strength and growth in agriculture, including recent expansions at Indiana Packers, which employs 2,000. And it showcases expansions in heritage tourism with the Delphi Opera House’s $4.25 million restoration and addition and continued enhancements to the Wabash & Erie Canal Park and Interpretive Center.

“Our regional draw for tourism is increasing, which bodes well for restaurants and retailers,” Walls said.

New industry, industrial park, job growth headline Carroll County news
‘Close Up’ report tallies investments, expansions, tourism impact

Delphi, Ind. – May 24, 2016 – Industry, agriculture, tourism and redevelopment are each thriving individually in Carroll County, Indiana, reports Carroll County Economic Development in its just-published, “Close Up: Keeping Our Eye on the Economy.”

“Combined, the capital investments and growth signal unparalleled robustness,” said Laura Walls, executive director of the nonprofit organization.

Among the top news is completion of the first building in the 60-acre Hoosier Heartland Industrial Park, a 40,000-square-foot facility on 10 acres that houses Carroll White REMC and the Carroll County Economic Development Corporation. “This has boosted interest in the remaining 50 acres,” Walls said.

The newest industry to choose the county for its operations is Wiechman Pig Co., opening a $1.3 million facility this year. The community also is benefiting from a $40.6 million expansion at pork processor Indiana Packers, which is adding 100 jobs to its current workforce of some 2,100.

“Visitors to the Delphi Opera House, which completed its $4.25 million restoration and is in the midst of its first season, is drawing good crowds,” Walls said. “That is a big plus, along with the Wabash & Erie Canal Park and Interpretive Center, in enhancing our county as a destination for visitors.”

Other Delphi developments include completion of Canal Commons, a 44-unit multifamily project, and renovation of 36 façades in its downtown. In Flora, a solar park and restoration of the Historic Flora Depot are under way.

“This is a county with a can-do spirit, and it’s evident in the way everyone comes together to achieve a healthy economy and quality of life,” Walls said. “This year is also a celebratory year, with Indiana Bicentennial events scheduled throughout Carroll County. We have a history to be proud of, and we’re creating a future that is generating a warm welcome to newcomers.”
